Training Your Tactics, why?

Playing rules and politics

It is assumed that cheerful women are less eager to pursue a management position. The biggest leadership ambitions are assigned to women who are proud of there own achievements. A survey concluded by the Technische Universität München (TUM) amongst 2000 persons supports this. They were presented with imaginary situations where women responded in a different way. Some women were positive and cheerful, where others were neutral and a third group was confident and proud of their achievements. The joyful women were perceived as the least ambitious.

According to scientists this has to do with a stereotype image people have about leaders. They are tougher, more conscious and behave more ‘manly’. Managers are perceived to be assertive, dominant and hard. Women are more likely to be perceived as kind, propitiate and social. Previous studies proved that people who clearly strive for a management position are also faster in obtaining such a position. Therefore women are more seen as less interested.

“If a nice position becomes vacant, men just go for it. If they are refused they will try again later. Most women are just doing their jobs and think that they will be rewarded with a promotion eventually.”

In the articles mentioned above the “play rules” within organisations are discussed. These rules and the way the game is played is determined by men. If women want to pursue the higher positions in the organisation it is important for them to know the differences between men and women in the behaviour and course of actions. Not for women to adjust, but to play the game in a strategic manner.

During the workshop participants will see the different perspective of men and women towards different situations. What is the underlying pattern and what influence does it have to the unwritten rules of the game of carrier making or effective influencing. Participants are challenged to discuss the question of which unwritten rules are influencing our company?
